What are the most common machining processes?

What is machining roughing?

Roughing is the initial phase of machining, where most of the material is removed to approximate the final shape of the part.
In small part machining processes, roughing must be perfectly controlled to avoid internal stresses or deformations, which is especially critical in precision parts.

Is milling the same as turning?

No. Although both are CNC machining processes, they have clear differences:

• Turning: the workpiece rotates → ideal for revolving parts
• Milling: the tool rotates → ideal for flat or complex surfaces

CNC bar turning is primarily based on automatic turning, optimised for assembly-line production.

Difference between precision turning and CNC machining

One of the most common questions is:
Are CNC turning and machining the same thing?

The short answer is: not exactly.

Although bar turning and CNC machining share similar technologies and principles, they are not exactly the same and respond to different production needs.

Bar turning is particularly specialised in the manufacture of small, high-precision parts, usually turned parts. This process is designed for assembly-line production, where large volumes with consistent repeatability are required. Automatic bar lathes are used for this purpose, allowing the part to be machined continuously from a metal bar, with a high level of automation and highly optimised cycle times.

CNC machining, on the other hand, is a broader concept that encompasses all types of parts, both small and large, simple and complex. It is used for short, medium and long runs, and employs a wide variety of machines, such as machining centres, CNC lathes, milling machines and multi-tasking machines. The level of automation can vary depending on the type of machine, the complexity of the part and the production volume.

Common materials in precision turning processes

Precision bar turning allows you to work with a wide variety of materials:

• Carbon steel
• Stainless steels
• Brass
• Aluminium
• Copper
• Special alloys

The choice of material depends on the end use of the part, the required tolerances and the industrial sector.

Types of machines used in bar turning

Last Friday, we celebrated our 60th anniversary at our facilities in Irún, in an event that brought together around 90 people, including employees, customers, partners and institutional representatives.

During the day, there was a tour of the facilities and a screening of a commemorative video about the history of the company. This was followed by one of the most special moments, an interactive talk led by organisational psychologist Ángel Castrillo, who, together with representatives of the three generations of Bianditz, proposed a symbolic journey to Mount Bianditz, which gives the company its name.

Through this metaphor, the company’s past, present and future were reviewed: the difficulties faced by those who paved the way, the experience of those who are currently following in their footsteps, and the vision of those who will continue the climb. Javier Martínez, CEO of Bianditz Group, highlighted the importance of collaboration as a pillar for continued growth. He stressed that the future of the company depends on relying on a solid network of local partners, strengthening ties and generating shared value.

The event also included recognition for employees with more than 25 years of service and concluded with a relaxed gathering featuring music and catering.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Irún, Cristina Laborda, accompanied by the Deputy Mayor, Nuria Alzaga, and the Director of the Mayor’s Office, Mikel Huarte. Eva Fernández, Director General of Bidasoa Activa, also attended. Representing the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa were Unai Andueza, Deputy for Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects; Amaia Arregi, Director General of Economic Promotion; and Xabier Iridoy, Director General of Innovation.

During the ceremony, the Mayor of Irún highlighted that ‘you have managed to convey very well who you are and what you do as a company,’ also emphasising ‘the challenge of continuity, generational change and deep roots’ as key elements of the project. For his part, Unai Andueza, Deputy for Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects, pointed out that “you have perfectly staged your trajectory. The first steps of the metallurgical tradition in this area can be seen in your history. That mountain, Bianditz, is an excellent metaphor for what you are today.”

Nach Kundenzeichnung gefertigter Schraubenbit zur Verwendung in der Automobilindustrie. Der Bit verfügt über einen TX25-Kopf, eine Länge von 257 mm (eine der längsten am Markt) und eine 1/4″-E6.3-Aufnahme. Eine Besonderheit ist der zylindrische Abschnitt mit 8 mm Durchmesser.

• Dispatch optimisation: Improving the layout has helped us refine our dispatch processes to ensure that each order is handled with the utmost accuracy and speed. This allows us to reduce errors and ensure that products reach our customers in perfect condition and on time.
• Reduced lead times: Both expediting optimisation and improved layout have been key to reducing order processing and delivery times. Our customers can now enjoy a faster and more efficient service.
