What is a drift punch?
If you are a carpenter, you have probably thought about having a punch in your toolbox at some point. Punches are a very commonly used tool in this sector. Thanks to punches, we can push in the small nails that remain on the surface when making a piece of furniture.
The punch is a tool known as an impact tool, and like any impact tool, its function is to transmit a blow or impact, in this case a hammer blow, to the material we want to manipulate. Therefore, the punch has to be made of hard materials to be able to transmit this force, which is why these tools are designed in steels with chromium and vanadium components.
Within the range of punches we can find different types such as conical punches, cylindrical punches or tip hiders, with sizes ranging from 2mm to 10mm depending on the thickness of the tip.
Punches for carpentry
As we have been saying, nail punches are mainly used in carpentry work to insert nails with a missing tip. This type of nail stands out for having a very small head and thanks to the nail punch we can hit them and make the tip “hidden” in the wood.
Dental punch
On the other hand, punches are also a widely used tool in dentistry. In this sector, they are mostly used as surgical elements to perform tooth extractions. Thanks to the impact on them, we can perform the necessary extractions more easily.
Automotive pins
The automotive industry is another sector in which pin pullers are widely used. Thanks to the shape of this tool, we can remove or move mechanical parts that have become stuck over the years or extract pins that we can find in vehicles. Therefore, if you have or work in a mechanical workshop, it is advisable to always have a pin puller on hand.
Industrial punches
Punches are a tool that is widely used in industry in general for marking, making adjustments or moving parts in general. Being an impact tool, they can help us in many situations where the parts are stuck and there is no way to move them.
Types of pushers
In the market we can find different types of punches and sizes for the different jobs you are going to do with them. The main ones are the following:
Cylindrical punches
Cylindrical punches have a long point and are regularly used to drive pins or parts such as bolts into spaces limited by the size of the hole.
Conical punches
Conical punches have the same purpose as cylindrical punches, to impact an element, but unlike cylindrical punches, conical punches are designed for impacts with greater force due to their shape. Therefore, if you need to make an impact on a surface without space limitations, the conical punch is a tool with which we will work in a more efficient way.
Hide-tip punch
As their name suggests, nail-hiding pins are a tool used to insert nails into elements such as wood, thus hiding them and then filling the hole with putty to leave the surface completely smooth.
Automatic puncher
Automatic punches are an impact tool, but instead of making the impact with a hammer, the tool itself has an internal mechanism that makes the movement. They are an interesting option if we do not want to use the hammer.
