Although at first glance we think that there are only two different types of screwdriver bits, once we start to investigate the market we can see that the reality is not the same. It is true that the two references of screwdriver bits most used by a home user are the PH and PZ bits, and more specifically the PH2 and PZ2. From time to time we may need a flat tip but it is increasingly difficult to find this type of tip. It is true that manufacturers, in order to cover their backs with possible user modifications, tend to use screws with special heads and therefore if we want to modify any of them, we will need special screwdriver bits. But in other cases we will need special screwdriver bits to be able to reach hard-to-reach places or bits made of special materials for certain specific jobs. That is why in this article we thought it would be interesting to comment on the special or rare screwdriver bits that we can find on the market, the uses that each of them can have, the materials they can be made of and the benefits in each case.

Types of special screwdriver bits by tip type

To start, we wanted to organize the list by mentioning screwdriver bits with a different head. As we have already mentioned, PH, PZ and Flat bits are the most common, but we can find other types, especially in very industrial sectors.

TX Screwdriver Bits

TX screwdriver bits are another of the most popular bits when it comes to using a tool. They are characterized by their 6-point star shape and thanks to their shape, they transmit a significant torque to the screw. TX screwdriver bits are often used regularly in the automotive or industrial sector and in recent years they have become very popular in sectors such as carpentry.

PZ Combi Tips

PZ Combi screwdriver bits are widely used in the electrical sector and especially in electrical panels. This type of bit is special because it is shaped like a PZ screwdriver bit and a flat tip at the same time. This means that the torque they provide is greater than that of a standard PZ bit.

TX Security Screwdriver Bits

Special TX security screwdriver bits are frequently used in spaces where, due to street action, an extra level of security is required when handling such screws. Within the range of TX security screwdriver bits we can find two types of special bits, the TX tamper and the TX TTAP. The first of these is a TX screwdriver bit but with the peculiarity that it has a circular hole in the tip, in this way it can be used on screws that have this peculiarity. On the other hand, we have the TX TTAP, which unlike the TX tamper bit, has a small protrusion on the tip and a central hole. Of the two types of special screwdriver bits, the TX tamper is the most commonly used.

TX pentalobe tips

TX Pentalobe screwdriver bits have a very similar shape to TX bits, but unlike standard TX bits, the star bits are flat. This type of screwdriver bit is classified as special because it is a security bit and because of its shape. It is another of the bits used in sectors such as the automotive industry.

Security Hex Screwdriver Bits

Hexagonal screwdriver bits are a type of bit that we see with some regularity on the market, but this one is different because it has a small hole in the tip, so we can use it on security screws.

Square screwdriver bits

Square screwdriver bits are another bit that we probably don’t see very often, but it is true that in recent years large furniture companies have used them to assemble their furniture, which is why it is a somewhat special screwdriver bit that we are not used to seeing.

This special type of screwdriver bit is used in the aviation/aeronautical sector so that it cannot be easily manipulated by anyone.

T.wing screwdriver bits

T.wing screwdriver bits are one of the most special or rare screwdriver bits that we can find on the market. Its 3-blade shape is very peculiar and we can differentiate this bit from others at a quick glance. Its use is also frequent in maintenance or manufacturing of aeronautical equipment. That is why we can say that it is a safety bit that will prevent quick manipulation on more than one occasion.

XZN Screwdriver Bits

XZN bits are a type of bit that we can apparently classify as special, but their use is widespread in the automotive and industrial sectors. Normally, most screwdriver bits are ¼” in size, but this type of bit is usually used for high torque tightening, which is why instead of ¼” size, the 10mm size is usually used.

Spanner screwdriver bits

Spanner screwdriver bits, unlike the ones we have been mentioning so far, which were focused on more industrial use, are usually used with some regularity in the electronics sector. That is why we will surely need this type of special screwdriver bit if we want to manipulate a telephone, console or computer.

Types of special screwdriver bits by material

So far we have talked about special screwdriver bits if we look at their tip, but within the tips we can have differences based on the materials used in their manufacture. At this point we can distinguish two special tip coatings:

Titanium Screwdriver Bits

Titanium screwdriver bits, also known as TiN, have a 3 micron +/-1 titanium nitride coating. Thanks to this coating, these bits are designed for intensive work on assembly lines, where work is carried out under perpendicular and torque conditions. We can distinguish this type of bit from the rest by its golden colour.

Titanium Carbonitride Screwdriver Bits

Titanium carbonitride screwdriver bits, also known as TiCN, are bits that have this ceramic coating applied to them, making them harder. The combination of this coating with the extra-quality bits provides the bit with toughness and highly professional results. We can distinguish this type of special bits by their grey colour, which is applied to the work area.

Type of screwdriver bits by length

If we look at the length of most screwdriver bits, we can see that they are 25 or 50mm long, but that does not mean that all bits are this size. There are cases where it is necessary to use longer bits. On the market we can also find bits with lengths of 75, 100 or 150mm long. In the case of needing to reach spaces that are further than 150mm, the use of extensions is recommended.

Threaded screwdriver bits

Threaded screwdriver bits are a bit that is not seen with any regularity, but can be important in certain industries. For this special type of bit, the tip would be shaped like a normal point and on the other side, instead of having a hexagonal shape, it would have a threaded shape so that it could be attached to the necessary tool or machine.

Double ended screwdriver bits

This type of screwdriver bit is something special and not very popular in European markets, but it is true that in Asian markets most of the bits sold have this base. It is an interesting option for all those people who want to have two different sizes of bits in the same item.

As we have mentioned before in the article, if we need a special screwdriver bit for assembly lines, the bits with TiN coating are the best option since thanks to this coating the useful life of the bit is extended.
